Net Send for Messaging

April 7, 2009

Remember the old net send command? Well, it still works.
Net send messages are used as one-way messages that appear as pop ups on the destination computer. You could send messages to both individuals and or to an entire domain.

Syntax: net send
Pre-requisite: By default, machines with WindowsXP Service Pack 2 installed, the messenger services is disabled. Go to My Computer > Manage > Services and Applications > Services > Messenger to enable and start messenger service.

  • Computer Management Console Tool
  • Third-party tools
From Mac to Windows ..?
– Use smbclient -M to connect to the windows machine
– Enter the message
– Press Ctrl + D to complete

using the machine IP gave out an error though:( session request failed. Ideas??
Also, I am not able to receive messages from the Windows machine to the Mac. Scanned the Web and saw that I need a pop up display but couldn’t get any to work 😦
